Stiver Engineering provided numerous services for capital improvements to a 108- inch-diameter water line running from Aldine Westfield Road to Willis Street in Houston, Texas. We created shoring and portal designs for launch and receiving shafts — some as deep as 31 feet — using sheet pile and soldier piles, wale sets, steel plates, timber lagging, and other methods. Stiver also created trench safety designs for installation, special shoring requirements with trench boxes, steel plates and soldier piles, and steel casing designs.

The Joes Creek Interceptor project in Dallas involves 8,370 linear feet of 60-inch excavated diameter tunnel that will house 36-inch HOBAS carrier pipe. There are 20 shafts (ranging from 21 to 48 vertical feet in depth), and ground conditions include sand, sand with gravel, sandstone, sandy clay, shaley clay, and shale (Eagle Ford). Stiver Engineering provided steel casing pipe calculations for 8 runs. We also created designs for various sizes of shoring pits using sheet piling and wale sets, as well as designs for a 32-foot-diameter liner plate and ring beam shaft at various locations and TBM face pressure calculations.

Stiver Engineering provided liner plate tunnel and bore pit design (launch and receiving) for 10 tunnel crossings as part of this integrated pipeline project. We also provided a trench safety design for pipeline installation, calculations for required jacking loads for carrier pipe in tunnels, and a grouting plan that accounted for pipe buoyancy calculations. This $21 million project for the Tarrant Regional Water District included 2,000 linear feet of 9-foot, 5-inch excavated diameter tunnel in 10 different tunnels crossing Texas Department of Transportation roads, each with launch and receiving shafts (20 shafts).

Stiver Engineering provided a custom beam and plate shoring design for the ongoing Northeast Water Purification Plant Expansion Project in Houston. The custom design was greater than 250 feet long. The pit was located next to Lake Houston with a live 74-inch diameter pipe that crossed through the shoring and discharged into Lake Houston. The shoring was installed so dual 108-inch water lines could be constructed. Stiver also prepared a custom pipe support frame that the contractor used to support the existing storm drainpipe while the dual water lines were built.

As part of work on three new Highway 105 bridges that cross rivers between Brenham and Navasota, Texas, Stiver Engineering provided a sheet pile and tie rod shoring system design for the installation of the bridges’ bent foundation and abutment. The shoring plan included temporary wale sets, as well as a staging plan for accessing and excavating to the required depth to install the bent foundation and abutment. The final stage of work was a permanent sheet pile structure around the bent that was filled with low density concrete.
